Jazz Notes: Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet #2

A short postscript to my post of February 27:

If you’ve exhausted Miles in Berlin (1964) and the Plugged Nickel recordings of 1965 (a seven CD box), I recommend you track down a concert recording of the Miles Davis Quintet at the Salle Pleyel in Paris on November 6, 1967. It was released on an Italian label in 1990 as No Blues (JMY 1003-2).

There are a number of quasi-legal European concert recordings from this winter tour, but this is the best I’ve heard: gorgeous versions of both standards (‘Round Midnight’ and ‘On Green Dolphin Street’) and band originals (Shorter’s ‘Masquelero’ and Hancock’s ‘Riot’) with a typically fiery and elastic Williams-Carter-Hancock rhythm section. Here are the full discographical details.

No Blues

And while we’re at it…

Thanks to a YouTube user I can post some clips from Karlsruhe, Germany recorded the next day, which is taken from the above DVD on ImproJazz: Miles Davis (tpt); Wayne Shorter (ts); Herbie Hancock (p); Ron Carter (b); Tony Williams (d). Here are the full discographical details.

‘Agitation’

‘I Fall In Love Too Easily’

‘Walkin”

And while we’re having so much fun, here is the complete Stockholm concert from October 31, 1967 (also available on the DVD):

‘Agitation’

‘Footprints’

”Round Midnight’

‘Gingerbread Boy’
