Continuing my survey of the Life magazine archives at Google Books…
Norman Mailer covered the Apollo 11 moonlandings in his idiosyncratic manner in a book eventually published as Of A Fire On The Moon (Little, Brown, 1971). Three excerpts appeared in Life:
Part I: A Fire On The Moon (29 Aug 1969)
Part II: The Psychology of Astronauts (14 Nov 1969)
Part III: A Dream of the Future’s Face (9 Jan 1970)
Mailer’s account of the 1971 Ali-Frazier fight was published as Ego (19 Mar)
In 1972 Mailer covered the Democratic convention in Miami: The Evil in the Room (28 Jul 1972). This account, revised and coupled with his account of the year’s Republican convention, was published that year as St George and the Godfather. This is a relatively obscure book of Mailer reportage from his most productive era, and a less dramatic companion to 1968′s Miami and the Seige of Chicago. For some reason published as a paperback original by the New American Library, St George and the Godfather was later republished complete in the hardcover anthology Some Honorable Men: Political Conventions, 1960-1972 (Little, Brown, 1976).
